Monhegan Island Light

Monhegan Island Light is a lighthouse in Lincoln County, Maine. Maine has 70 lighthouses on record at Wayfarrow, 6 of them in Lincoln County.

It was built in 1850, in the Civil War era, making it the 7th oldest of the 61 in Maine with a recorded construction date; the tower stands about 47 feet tall (15th tallest of 53 measured in Maine); its light sits 177 feet above the water; the light characteristic is recorded as Fl W 15s (a white flash every 15 seconds), with a range of about 20 nautical miles; the recorded designer or builder is Alexander Parris; the structure is built of stone.

Status check, 2026-11: The station dates from 1824, but the current granite tower was built in 1850. Most sources give 47 ft, but one gives 48 and the Wikipedia infobox says 46. The light is still active and the station now houses the Monhegan Museum. Monhegan Island Light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not reachable by road: the nearest road is about 11 miles away, so it is seen from shore or reached by water. It stands at 43.7648° N, 69.3158° W.
